What Does This Program Do?

Generates custom braille embossing plates for cylinders such as labels and containers.

First Step: Decide What to Include

Braille space is limited. Not everything from print will fit.

Embosser version

Choose Version 2 only if you are building the Version 2 embosser, which uses keyed gear pegs. Version 1 stays supported.

Note: Contracted braille combines letters into single cells, so the character limit is only confirmed after translation — the program will warn you automatically if it's too long.

Tip: need one more cell per line? The tactile arrow Row Indicator Style reserves no cells for markers, so every cell in the row is available for your text.
Capital letters are translated by default (each adds a capital-indicator cell). To save cells you can disable capitalization in Expert Mode, where number-sign options also live.
Accepts braille characters only (U+2800–U+28FF). Press Translate to Braille to fill this field from the text above, then edit any cell you want to change — or paste braille straight in and press Translate to Text to read it back in English. Whenever this field has content it is used exactly as written, so what you read here is what gets embossed. Clear it to go back to translating the text above.

Integrated Gears (BETA — for testing)

Adds the top and bottom drive gears to each generated cylinder as one solid piece, matched to the roller assembly. The barrel prints solid while this is on.
Important: Integrated gears fit only the one-piece geared-roller housing. They do not fit the Version 1 or Version 2 embosser bodies.

Default: English (UEB), United States — contracted (grade 2). The BANA Guidelines for Brailling Business Cards (March 2024) says to follow The Rules of Unified English Braille, and every worked example in that fact sheet is contracted UEB. Contractions also pack more of a name, phone number, or e-mail address into the 13–14 cells a card row allows. Switch to uncontracted (grade 1) only if your reader has asked for it.

Row Indicator Style

Default. A recessed triangle, plus the optional indicator letter, in marker cells at the start of every row. Uses one or two braille cells per row. A raised arrow on the embossing plate and a matching recess on the counter plate, centred in the gap at the cylinder seam with the point toward the top. Uses no braille cells, so every cell in the row is available for text.
Tactile lets a blind user find the alignment point and tell which end is up by touch: the arrow is one continuous wedge, nothing like a braille dot, and raised-versus-recessed tells you which cylinder you are holding. It also frees the marker cells for text. Both plates of a pair must use the same style. Its dimensions live in the Tactile Indicator Dimensions submenu of Expert Mode.

Card Thickness

Selecting a card thickness preset will automatically adjust all braille dot and surface parameters to values tuned for embossing that card stock. This is the thickness of the paper business cards you feed through the cylinders — the printed plate itself is always 2 mm thick either way. "Custom" is automatically selected when you modify any parameter.
